From September 15–17, Grain Data Solutions Inc. joined Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show in Woodstock, Ontario, to introduce FeedProbe and connect with the people it is being developed to support. Our booth and Ag Tech Breakfast presentation opened conversations about a practical question: how can farmers check changing silage moisture more easily and use that information when preparing feed?

How FeedProbe measures silage moisture

Moisture varies with weather and across a bunker. When it changes, the same weight of silage delivers a different amount of dry matter. A measurement that fits into the daily feeding routine gives farmers current information to work from.

FeedProbe is our portable silage moisture measurement technology, currently in development and field validation. It combines a sensor with a connected application that translates a moisture reading into a target loading weight. The design target is a reading in under 60 seconds, taken at the bunker face, so producers can adjust while keeping their nutritionist’s dry-matter targets in view.

At our booth, we demonstrated the prototype and walked farmers and agricultural professionals through the four steps: fill the chamber with a representative silage sample, measure at the bunker face, read the moisture and dry matter, then load the target weight for the day. These conversations kept the focus on everyday use and on what a reading means for the next load.

Presenting at the Ag Tech Breakfast

Our founder, Dr. Mahla Mirali, also presented FeedProbe at the Ag Tech Breakfast. She described the farmer-driven problem behind its development. A producer facing unpredictable moisture changes had found the available measurement options too slow, too difficult to use or too costly.

That experience helped frame the project around accessible, fast on-farm measurement. The presentation connected the sensor and app concept to a familiar feeding decision with a worked example: a 58 per cent moisture reading translating to a target of 833 kg in place of the 1,000 kg the ration assumed.

FeedProbe in the agricultural news

Two agricultural publications covered FeedProbe and our participation in the show, sharing the project with a wider farming audience.

Farmtario

Diana Martin’s Farmtario report explored the prototype’s proposed measurement workflow, the challenge of fluctuating silage moisture and the need for further on-farm calibration. It also described a booth conversation with Sunderland-area dairy producer Jeremy Snodden.

Grainews

Jonah Grignon’s Grainews roundup featured Dr. Mirali’s Ag Tech Breakfast presentation alongside other agricultural startups. It highlighted the farmer conversation that inspired FeedProbe and the aim of linking a portable sensor to practical feeding decisions.

Looking ahead

We are continuing FeedProbe’s development and field validation, with attention to how the system performs across real feeding conditions. We welcome conversations with dairy producers, nutritionists and industry partners interested in helping shape a useful on-farm tool.
